Presentation - JANNuS

Context

Understanding and controlling the parameters driving the lifetime of equipment remains one of the major technical challenges for industries in a wide range of activities.
This is particularly true for equipment submitted to irradiation, such as in the space and nuclear industries. For example, the lifetime assessment of current and future fission or fusion nuclear reactors depends on the available understanding of the resistance of materials under irradiation.
Moreover, irradiation is a very efficient experimental tool to modify and control the evolution of material properties at the nanometric scale. It plays an important role in microelectronics component production, circuit manufacturing, opto-electronics, and contributes to the development of nanometric technology.

JANNuS as a Université Paris-Saclay facility

Around an ion irradiation facility unique in Europe, JANNuS brings together major technical and scientific skills in the fields of ion beam-assisted synthesis, implantation/irradiation-induced modification of materials, and characterization of irradiated solids and surfaces.
This partnership stimulates collaborations between theoreticians and experimentalists, using ion irradiation to induce and control the evolution of material properties at a nanometric scale.
The JANNuS project is also strongly involved in the development of teaching and training activities near charged particle accelerators.

JANNuS, a multi-ion beam irradiation experimental facility

To simulate neutron-induced damage and atom production in nuclear materials using ion beams.
To modify the properties of materials and synthesize new phases in a fully controlled way by ion implantation or irradiation.
To quantify the evolution of both the chemical composition and the microstructure of irradiated materials using available online ion beam analysis techniques.
To study the chemical/structural evolution of materials under single/multi irradiation in a dedicated Transmission Electron Microscope coupled with two ion accelerators, either in situ or post-mortem.
To create a strong interaction between experimental and modeling scientists involved in material irradiation behavior from the nanometric scale to the macroscopic scale.
To promote teaching and training activities in the field of ion/matter interactions.

Management

JANNuS is jointly managed by CEA, CNRS/IN2P3, and Université Paris-Saclay as a Group of Scientific Interest (GIS).
JANNuS, established on two neighboring sites (Orsay and Saclay), offers the international research community the opportunity to perform irradiation experiments (associated or not to in situ characterization such as Transmission Electron Microscopy, Raman or Ion Beam Analysis) on promising advanced materials. Moreover, JANNuS is also open to industry for irradiation testing or physico-chemical and structural characterization of advanced materials.

Projects of experiments can be submitted to JANNuS via the EMIR&A website during the annual call. Proposals are assessed by the EMIR&A Scientific Committee and beam time is then allocated by the Steering Committee. More info at https://jannus.in2p3.fr/request-beam-time/
